The Great Alaska Highway!! - Part 3

The Yukon, land of the midnight sun (or the land of the midday night if you are here in the winter.)

The Yukon!!

Our first stop is the Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake, Yukon.  It was started by a homesick GI and has grown by the many who travel the Alaska Highway.  It would take all day to see the more than 100,000 signs posted, so instead of buying and installing our own (available from the gift shop) we found a sign that needed some love and made our mark.

The Yukon section of the Alaska highway is considerably more treacherous than the British Columbia portion. There are several sections of the highway that are yet to be paved or are (still) under construction. We had good weather on our side but riding a bike that is over 1,000 pounds with us and all the gear is still a challenge.

(Carmen said that "Not many people could steal our bike when it is fully loaded" and I am beginning to question my own sanity for riding with this much stuff. Time to pair down.. again.)

Following the pilot truck  through loose dirt.

The views make up for the road conditions.

Whitehorse, Yukon is the capitol of the province.  It is also the largest town along the highway a great place to regroup and stock up on supplies. There is an unusually large amount of people that wander the streets drunk at all times of the day.. the city should be renamed "Crazy-Horse" for just that reason.. ("Is that a guy shooting up Heroin on the corner in the middle of the day? Yes... yes he is.")

We did, however, enjoy a great salmon dinner at Klondike Rib and Salmon BBQ which was highly recommended by our hostel hostess at the Beez Kneez Bakpaker.

Flat Mounty

Someday she will catch one like the anamotronic bears do!

In Haines Junction you can go South to Canada to catch the ferry or head north to Alaska. We head North from hear to Destruction Bay which takes you alongside the gorgeous Kluane Lake.

TO ALASKA!

Destruction Bay

Here are some of our favorite photos from the Yukon. It is truly breathtaking.

Moose!

No one for miles on the long and winding road.

To be continued..
