Let There Be Grunge

What do you think of when you think of Seattle?

Space Needle? Seahawks? The color grey? Bridge trolls?

Fremont Bridge Troll
So much GREY!
For us, it's music.
Seattle was The Music that defined our generation.

In the early nineties, hair bands were ruling the airwaves and MTV.  We're talking about grown "men" in spandex, eyeliner and a can of hairspray daily.
But then the gods of rock said "Let there be Grunge" and it was good. Sad Pacific Northwest boys with guitars reclaimed the rock music scene and became the soundtrack for our life.

While we were in Seattle we made sure to visit the EMP Museum (Experience Music Project). The architecture of the building stands out among the skyscrapers of the downtown area.

This is not our photo. We arrived in the middle of a thunderstorm soaked to the bone.

Pretty cool eh?
It was raining so hard that it was raining on the inside of the EMP.

Slippery!

There are a lot of fun exhibits and a little something for everyone.

Of course music is the main theme but there are sports (we skipped that part), animation, fantasy, Sci-fi and horror just to name a few.

I got you Kurt!
But hey, it was 99 cents!

And the bottom

They have a great interactive Chuck Jones exhibit that is fun for all ages. My favorite part were the original sketches by Mr Jones himself.

Kill Da Wabbit!

At the Sci-fi exhibit there was a palpable nerdgasm going on.  Everything from Dr. Who to Aliens.

EXTERMINATE!
The Fantasy exhibit has a lot of great costumes from Game of Thrones and some of our favorite movies like "The Princes Bride" and Monty Python's "The Holy Grail".

"You killed my father, prepare to die"

"Leave or I shall taunt you a second time!"
The horror exhibit was a little less impressive but not really our bag either. There were a few cool costumes though like this one from Shaun of The Dead.

"You've got red on you"

For a limited, there is an exhibit of Star Wars costumes. They have done a beautiful job of explaining how the costumes make such a huge impact in the movies and the inspiration behind them.

After Seattle we made a quick pilgrimage to Aberdeen,WA, which is the hometown of Kurt Cobain. Even in the middle of the week there were people there to see the small park near his childhood home that is dedicated to his legacy.

"Come as You Are"

"Underneath the bridge, tarp has sprung a leak.."
Kids probably born after Mr. Cobain's death still pay their respects.

Air Guitar stand! Matthew rocking out.
A few block away from the park is Kurt's childhood home. It is for sale for a mere half million dollars!  (This is in a neighborhood of $40,000 houses with peeling paint and unkept yards.)

And a short drive outside of Aberdeen there is a winery featuring a bottle of Nirvana. Very tasty!

Stay tuned, we have volcanoes to almost see.
