Up Ship Creek With a Stick!

At the top of Carmen's Alaska Bucket list was salmon fishing.  We love salmon and pretty much all seafood. When in Alaska do as the Alaskans do!

After just a little research Matthew found out that we were in the prime location for salmon fishing and on one of the best days of the season. Nearby to the Hotel is Ship Creek, which runs right through Anchorage, there is a small bait shop that will give you gear, waders and a one day fishing license. It's just that simple.

We weren't the only ones out on this unusually warm sunny day in South central Alaska.

Down Ship Creek.

Up Ship Creek.

With waders and gear we take off to find our spot in Ship Creek.  You really need the waders because it is fairly muddy and slippery.

All you need to fish and a stick!

We found a less busy part of the creek and took turns trying to look like we knew what we we're doing.

Much to our surprise it didn't take long for Matthew to snag a beautiful sockeye salmon.  DINNER!!

I will let the pictures tell the story.

Hit it with a stick!

So, here is where we had a little bit of added difficulty. We are on a motorcycle and staying in a hostel.  How do we transport, prepare and cook this bad girl?  It's a good thing that we are also fairly resourceful.

The side boxes will need an extra deep cleaning but works fine for transporting our catch of the day.

We bought a tabletop grill for a few dollars that came with a single serving of charcoal.  We also picked up some fixins. Plates, forks and of course and celebratory bottle of wine.

Off with Her Head!

Matthew cleaned and gutted the fish in the parking lot. Hey look, it's a girl. She was probably heading up stream to lay her eggs but now she's dinner. But it's OK to eat fish, cause they don't have any feelings.

This is her big bad sack of Roe.

No one seems to mind, it is Alaska after all.

A simple preparation with some Coarse Sea Salt.

Voila! Dinner is served!!
Happy!

Happy!

Joy! Joy!
